The Tale Your Family Kept—Day 30

 🎃 31 Days of Caribbean Folklore—Day 30

📖 STORY: The Tale Your Family Kept

Not every piece of folklore lives in a book.

Some stories survived because a grandmother whispered them on a veranda at dusk. Some were warnings told by lantern light. Some were repeated so often, on journeys home and in kitchens and yards, that they became part of the family itself.

All month, I have told you the tales my family kept. Now I am asking for yours.

✨ We are not asking for proof. We are asking for memory. We are asking for the words that stayed with you. ✨

Did an elder repeat a particular phrase until every child knew it by heart? A warning about a spirit, a duppy, a soucouyant, a rolling calf, the Heartman, or another figure of the night? A saying that ran your household's evenings?

Share it exactly as you heard it. When you comment, tell us:

🌴 The island or country the story comes from

👵🏽 The storyteller—grandmother, grandfather, aunt, neighbor, village elder

🗣️ The phrase, warning, or story, as you remember it

And know this before you share: a story you post here remains yours and your family's. We credit the teller and the island, always—the same way my mother's tellings are credited in this series.

A remembered phrase to begin—from my own mother, in Jamaica, from Day 20's telling of Puss and Dog: when Puss slipped away again and again to the "christenings," these were the names he came home with—

"Top take off. Catch in de middle. Lick clean."

Three little names for one stolen pat of butter—and every child who heard that story knew exactly what Puss had been doing. That is a kept story: small, funny, and impossible to forget.

Stories survive because someone remembers.

What tale did your family keep alive? 👇

🕯️ THE BLESSING OF SAFE TELLING

------------------------------------------------------------

As we gather to remember the stories carried by our elders, may wisdom walk beside us and peace dwell within us.

May the tales shared here be lamps of memory, not doors of fear. May the voices of our ancestors guide our understanding, and may all that is good, true, and protective surround us.

May we be blessed in our going out and in our coming in. May our homes be guarded, our paths be clear, and our hearts remain grounded in light.

To the seen and the unseen, we offer respect. To the stories entrusted to us, we offer care. To the memories carried across generations, we offer gratitude.

May every storyteller be protected, every listener be uplifted, and every tale shared in this space serve wisdom, remembrance, and community.

With gratitude for those who came before us, we receive these stories in good faith and release them in peace.

So it stay, guidance. ✨
