Witchcraft weekend will cast a spell on you

Witches will descend on Lancaster Castle this weekend as part of a two day event to mark the 402nd anniversary of the Lancashire Witch Trials.

The events will commemorate the 10 men and women who were hanged in the summer of 1612.
The event will begin on Friday night with a dinner hosted by one of the accused witches, Ann Redfern – Daughter of Chattox.

As you sup on a glass on Pendle Witches Brew, Ann will share her tale of the twisted and torturous series of event that led to the trial of her and the ten other alleged witches, all before tucking in to a traditional three course 17th Century meal.
Over Saturday and Sunday, there will be a number of family-friendly events and activities at the castle. Broomstick Training, Medieval Potion Making, Birds of Prey and Storytelling are just some of the things that will be on offer to entertain young and old alike.

There will also be a chance to visit the castle dungeons where the unfortunate victims were imprisoned.
Lancaster City Councillor Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for culture and tourism, said: “There’s no doubt Lancaster has a fascinating history, but no episode is more fascinating or darker than the story of the Lancashire Witches.
“It is important to separate fact from centuries of fiction. We must learn from history and never repeat such dreadful inhumanities.

“The event on Friday in particular will provide visitors to Lancaster Castle with a stirring insight into a story that has captivated people for centuries followed by two days of fun for all the family.”

Events go ahead: Friday 15 August 7pm – 10:30pm (£29.95pp), Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August 11am – 5pm (£1 admission charge, additional charges for Broomstick Training and Potion Making).
